Collaboration in action: optimizing
of NUCLeUS for health technology

Esaturnus, a sony group company

eSATURNUS makes surgeons' work easier by digitizing the operating room and supporting workflow by putting the right information on the right screen, automatic image processing, opportunities for colleagues or students to virtually attend a procedure, .....

Hospitals are relieved by using the self-developed solution called NUCLeUS. Several hospitals in Europe benefit from the technology that is not standing still but is constantly being developed. eSATURNUS approached Continuum for that further development. We spoke to Axel Schollaert about the collaboration with Continuum.

Continuum adds value by not only providing consultants but also by taking full ownership of a part of the project.

Need for additional support due to additional developments

After winning a European tender, extra Java developers are needed at eSATURNUS. A European hospital would like to have some things added to NUCLeUS to optimize the technology for its own operation. The internal load becomes very high this way. eSATURNUS contacts Continuum for this since there has been a partnership for several years. Continuum can free up some experienced consultants so eSATURNUS can develop the hospital's requirements within the predefined timeframe.

When choosing a consultancy, it is important to find a good match with eSATURNUS and the consultants themselves. Within eSATURNUS, they are fully occupied with developing the new generation of NUCLeUS. The consultants from Continuum have started and are proactive, demonstrating ownership, and are capable of working independently on the project.

Concretely, the project includes several requirements important to the European hospital. Together with Continuum, a development team was set up to take steps toward the solution.

Solutions

One of those needs is to reassure patients, especially children, before the start of a surgery. Within NUCLeUS, the 'patient distraction system' is being developed. By making visually pleasing images available on all screens in the operating room, patients become calmer.

In addition, it makes surgeons' work easier since all screens can be dimmed simultaneously. This is a benefit for both the patient and the doctor's focus.

NUCLeUS N3.9.0 Patient Distraction System 20230425

In summary, we are very satisfied with our collaboration with Continuum. The technology stack aligned well, and the right profiles in terms of approach and commitment were put to work. We greatly appreciated the excellent match in terms of personnel, as they met the needs we had at that time.

It is possible through NUCLeUS to make images of the procedure available outside the operating room. To ensure security, a light indicates that images are shared outside the OR. Additionally, Continuum's consultants have laid the foundation to transmit these images with minimal delay via WebRTC.

Collaboration

Throughout the project, a minimum level of quality has been ensured. The collaboration with Continuum's consultants has been positive.

It is not guaranteed that a project with such requirements will proceed smoothly in the short term. However, in combination with the dedicated group of developers, the European hospital's requirements were successfully met. Continuum's high-quality standards ensured that a strong product was delivered together.
